Between the Interior Plateaus and the Monashee and Cariboo Ranges lay the highlands of the Thompson-Shuswap.
Known for its myriad of lakes and rivers, the mountains and valleys of this area attract visitors all year round. But it's the beaches that are the most sought-after destinations. Because of their popularity, most of the commercial beaches come equipped with family-oriented facilities such as playgrounds, restrooms, concessions and barbeque pits. The more popular beaches include Shuswap Lake Provincial Park, Herald Provincial Park, Sicamous Sands Public Beach Park, Narrows Village Beach and White Lake. And since the water's often as warm and appealing as the sand, most locations have nearby water-sports rental outlets.
The lakes of the area serve other purposes as well. Kamloops Lake and Nicola Lake are also both known for their amazing fishing, as are many others in the area. Tunkwa Lake has even been home to the World Fly Fishing Championship! For an entirely different vibe, check out the gorgeous houseboat community of Shuswap Lake.
Hiking and biking are other popular pastimes in the region. Home to some of the most picturesque hiking trails in BC, the entire Okanagan Valley offers everything from wilderness to wetlands to waterfalls. Some favourite treks include Strake Lake, Roderick Haig Brown Provincial Park, the Peterson Creek Trail, the Marble Canyon Trail and the Lake Shore Trail. Popular mountain bike trails include The Bike Ranch and BMX Track in Kamloop's McArthur Park, Merritt's Hogsback Trail and Logan Lake's Greenstone Mountain Trail.
But when winter comes, it brings with it a whole new variety of activities. Sun Peaks, just outside of Kamloops brags an awesome 3,678 acres of skiable terrain with 122 runs that that cover 3 peaks. But you don't even have to make it to the mountain to experience some good alpine fun. Most neighbourhoods have a network of snowmobile trails making this exhilarating form of transportation the norm during the winter months. Various tour companies offer packages ranging from family-friendly to fast-and-furious with some of the best snowmobile services located in Helmer Lake, Swakum Mountain, Skimkin Creek, Tod Mountain, Cicero Creek and Mount Bob. Additionally, many trails specifically cater to the large population of cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiast who also call this their winter playground.
