British Columbia's temperate climate has made the province an incubation ground for numerous sports, whether you're an athlete or an avid fan.
Expectant spectators need go no further than Vancouver to enjoy some of the best pro sports in North America. The National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks play to a full-house of 18,630 for most of their 42 regular season home games (with a season that runs October to April), while across town, the Pacific Coliseum hosts the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants. Not a hockey fan? Gridiron gurus can catch all the Canadian Football League action at BC Place Stadium - home of the BC Lions, from June to November. June through September belongs to the boys of summer, the Vancouver Canadians, a Single-A fastball team that plays out of Nat Bailey Stadium. And of course, lovers of The Beautiful Game can visit Swangard Stadium from March to September to enjoy the city's rich soccer culture that the Vancouver Whitecaps continue to nurture.
But watching is only half the equation. BC has numerous venues and facilities for those who consider themselves athletes at any level. Winters belong to Skiing and Snowboarding enthusiasts, with alpine resorts across the province providing amazing conditions. Mt. Washington, Cypress Bowl, Mt. Seymour, Grouse Mountain, Silver Star, Big White, Sun Peaks, Apex… the list goes on and on - not unlike many of the runs!
Ice Skating is another favourite BC pastime. Whether you're dropping in for a game of pick-up hockey or teaching the little ones how to skate, most towns and municipalities have rinks and skate rentals. One of the most popular is the new Richmond Olympic Oval which (once it has fulfilled its duty as a 2010 Winter Olympic Venue) will open to the public with 2 international-size ice rinks, a 200 meter running track, 8 gymnasiums and over 23,000 square feet of fitness centre.
Water Sports are an eternally popular part of this province's warmer weather recreation. Whether you're on a river, lake or ocean shore, there's sure to be a rental company nearby offering everything from surfboards, wakeboards, canoes and kayaks to full-day fishing charters. The exceptionally temperate climate also males for perfect Golfing weather. PGA standard courses dot the islands and mainland of BC, many with award winning pro-designs. Fore!
Did we forget anything? Recreation centres the province over offer drop-in floor hockey, badminton, basketball and volleyball, among other sports.
Welcome to BC… Game on!
