In many part of the world, the age-old tradition of the fair is as much a part of summer as swimming holes, road-trips and camping. British Columbia is no exception.

From city exhibition to country fair, from live-music to livestock, there’s one thing that all these events have in common. ( you probably already know what it is): As you follow the teeming crowd towards the turnstiles, as the smells of hotdogs and hay assail your senses, new sounds float by on the hot summer air… maybe a long, low rumble; maybe a cacophony of delighted screams; maybe the call of a Carny… Then you see it… it could be a Ferris wheel or even the trellis-work of an old wooden rollercoaster, but somewhere deep down inside, your inner child just let out a whoop of excitement. That’s what the feeling in your stomach is. No matter what your age, the thrill of the Midway isn’t lost on anyone. Let’s go to the funfair!

Yes, the prize-winning heifer is fascinating, the rodeo is intriguing and the local goods and produce are well worth perusing, but nor until you’ve had your fill of adrenaline-inducing thrill rides! Whether you’re breaking into a cold sweat while looking at the spinning teacups or licking your lips looking at that triple corkscrew rollercoaster, there’s a ride worth jumping on somewhere in the province. Due to large amounts of domestic pressure, the colony of British Columbia joined the Confederation on July 21, 1867, becoming the sixth province to join the new country of Canada.

In the years that followed, the province grew and prospered as the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) connected the westernmost province with the rest of the country. Today, almost 150 years later, British Columbia is a booming centre of art, agriculture and industry with an ever-growing population that currently sits at approximately 4.5 million. But this beautiful province underwent many events and changes that helped form its modern face. And if you know where to look, echoes of these events and landmark moments can be found all over BC. From February 12-28 and March 12-21, 2010 XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games will play out in Vancouver, British Columbia and the neighbouring alpine resort of Whistler.

Tens of thousands of spectators will flock to Canada’s beautiful West Coast while millions more will watch on televisions around the country and the world. But as March draws to a close, the Olympic crowds will disperse. The mountains will begin to lose their snow. Vancouver’s rain will be gradually replaced by warm, sunny weather. But for many, this anticlimax is only the beginning of a whole new world of possibilities as Vancouver and Whistler welcome summer.

Of course, the Winter Games will leave one particularly indelible impression: the permanent structures and facilities that this global event necessitated. Catching the Skytrain will forever be easier thanks to the massive brand new Granville Street Terminus. UBC’s students and visitors will enjoy fantastic use from the new Thunderbird Arena, a 7,200-seater designed for both recreational activities and high-performance training and similarly, Vancouver Olympic Centre will become a multi-purpose recreation hub. Even Whistler will keep its new world-class Sliding Centre. Yet even without these lavish legacies, Vancouver and Whistler both have summers attractions that are the envy of the entire country.
