The Ucluelet region derives its name from the Nuu-Chah-Nulth phrase, Yu-cluthl-ahts, meaning a good landing place for canoes. Located at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Ucluelet is known for its wild, wet climate and its natural beauty.

Known to locals as Ukee, the small village has a history stretching back over 4000 years, where First Nations people thrived on its abundant marine and forest resources. European settlers arrived in the area in 1858 to establish a trading post at Spring Cove, which is at the south end of Ucluth Peninsula. Captain Peter Francis was the first settler who owned several schooners which he used for sealing in the spring, and for trading and freighting the rest of the year to the Hudson's Bay Company in Victoria.

The development of Ucluelet since that time followed a resource-based economy with commercial fishing, logging, and mining providing the main sources of employment. Now, the economy is shifting and diversifying to include more value-added industries such as tourism, construction and development, retail, and fish processing. Tourism is the fastest growing sector due to the wide range of recreational opportunities, community special events, and Ucluelet's close proximity to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Barkley Sound and Clayoquot Sound.

There is much to see and do on this beautiful edge of Vancouver Island. Spring offers the chance to watch gray whales as they migrate down the coast towards the Baja, while summer brings warm days to spend walking the sandy beaches or learning to surf. The cooler days of autumn are perfect for hiking the Wild Pacific Trail. In winter, relax in the hot tub overlooking the beach, and watch magnificent waves crash against the rocks on the shores below.
